If you ever had any doubt that statist politicians are, inch by inch, taking us toward the establishment of a totalitarian state, the McCain-Feingold and Shays-Meehan bills should remove all doubt. However, very quietly, statists have launched an effort to amend the Constitution to gut the First Amendment. It will take years for such an amendment to be adopted. However, the significance of the proposed amendment is that it exposes statists for what they are: would-be dictators who seek to silence you by abolishing freedom of speech.
